Quantitative Aptitude Set -417

Here we are providing new series of Quantitative Aptitude Questions for upcoming exams, so the aspirants can practice it on a daily basis.

1) A boat travels upstream to cover 40 km and travel downstream to cover 120 km. If the ratio of the speed of boat in still water to speed of stream is 2: 1, what

is the difference between the time taken by the boat covers upstream and downstream distance?

A.4 hours

B.2 hours

C.5 hours

D.Cannot be determined

E.None of these

2) A boat took 12 hours less to travel a certain distance downstream than to travel the same distance upstream. If the speed of a boat in still water is 20 km/hr and speed of a stream is 12 km/hr, then find the total distance travelled by boat in downstream?

A.112 km

B.140 km

C.128 km

D.156 km

E.None of these

3) A boat takes two hours more to travel upstream than travel the same distance in downstream. If the distance travelled by the boat is 120 km and the ratio of the speed of boat in still water to stream is 5: 1, then what is the speed of the boat in still water?

A.20 kmph

B.25 kmph

C.30 kmph

D.35 kmph

E.None of these

4) A boat can cover 48 km upstream in 72 minutes. If the speed of the current is 2/7th of the boat in still water, then how much distance (in km) can the boat cover downstream in 90 minutes?

A.135 km

B.142 km

C.108 km

D.124 km

E.None of these

5) A boat can travel 90 km upstream and 120 km downstream in 12 hours 30 minutes. What is the speed of the stream, if the boat can travel 60 km downstream in 2 hours 30 minutes?

A.5 kmph

B.6 kmph

C.8 kmph

D.10 kmph

E.None of these

Answers :

1) Answer: E

Speed of downstream 2x + x = 3x

Speed of upstream = 2x – x = x

Time taken by the boat to cover the upstream distance = 40/x

Time taken by the boat to cover the downstream distance = 120/3x = 40/x

Difference = 40/x – 40/x = 0 hours

2) Answer: C

Let the total distance be x,

Speed of downstream = 20 + 12 = 32 km/hr

Speed of upstream = 20 - 12 = 8 km/hr

According to the question,
12 = (x/8) – (x/32)

12 = (4x – x)/32

(12 * 32) = 3x

x = (12 * 32) / 3 = 128 km

The total distance travelled by boat in downstream = 128 km

3) Answer: B

Distance = speed * time

120/4x - 120/6x = 2

(30 – 20)/x = 2

10 = 2x

= > x = 5

Speed of the boat in still water = 5 * 5 = 25 kmph

4) Answer: C

Speed of upstream = (48*60) / 72 = 40 km/hr

Speed of current: Speed of still water = 2: 7

Speed of upstream = Speed of still water - speed of Current

40 = 5x => x =8

Speed of current = 16 km/hr

Speed of still water = 56 km/hr

Speed of downstream= Speed of still water + speed of Current

= > 56 + 16 = 72 km/hr

Speed = 72 km/hr, Time = 90 minutes

Distance = 72*(90/60) = 108 km

5) Answer: B

Distance = speed * time

Downstream speed = 60/2.5 = 24 kmph

120/24 + 90/x = 12.5

90/x = 12.5 – 5

x = 12 kmph

Speed of the upstream = 12 kmph

Speed of the stream = ½ * (24 - 12)

= 6 kmph
