1) Answer: D
Downstream Speed = 5x and Upstream speed = 3x
25/5x + 30/3x = 7.5
=> x = 2
Speed of the boat in still water = ½ * (Downstream speed + Upstream speed)
= ½ * (5x + 3x) = (8*2)/2 = 8kmph
2) Answer: E
300/(5x – 4x) + 432/(5x + 4x) = 58
2700 + 432 = 58 * 9x
x = 6
Speed of current = 4 * 6 = 24 kmph
3) Answer: A
Downstream speed of boat A = 96/6 = 16 kmph
Downstream speed of boat B = 120/8 = 15 kmph
Speed of boat A = 16 – 5 = 11 kmph
Speed of boat B = 15 – 5 = 10 kmph
Required time = 180/(11 – 5) + 180/(10 – 5)
= 66 hours
